A Simple, Bold Idea

The early days of Safer Way, where John Mackey's journey began.

John Mackey's story begins with a simple yet bold idea. He and Renee Lawson left the Prana House co-op and with just $45,000 scraped together from family and friends, they opened Safer Way in Austin, Texas - Safer Way being a play on the name "Safeway."

Overcoming Early Challenges

The early days were tough: John was evicted from his duplex, was living above the store and above all, he had a lot to learn about business. In their first year, they lost half of their capital and faced accusations of greed and exploitation; however, John knew that business wasn't about coercion or a zero-sum game. It was about cooperation and voluntary exchange.

The Turning Point: Merging and Expanding

The first Whole Foods Market, where a new chapter in natural foods retail began.

This revelation fueled his determination to prove that capitalism could be a force for good. In 1980, John and Renee merged Safer Way with Clarksville Natural Grocery, creating the first Whole Foods Market. This 10,500 square foot store with a staff of 19 offered a diverse product mix including meat, beer and wine, thus appealing to a broader audience. Within 6 months, Whole Foods became the highest-volume natural-food store in America.

The Power of Capitalism

John Mackey's journey is a testament to the power of entrepreneurship and the positive impact of capitalism. His story will not only inspire you but also challenge the conventional narrative about business and its role in society.
